One of the places I went to was the Hagia Sophia. This building was originally built as a Christian Church, with many frescoes and murals of Christian icons. Then it became a mosque and the painting were white-washed over and mosaics and other items of Islamic art were brought in. These days the Hagia Sophia is a museum and the restorers have been brought in. They have started to remove the whitewash and are restoring the original artwork, while leaving the newer artwork in place.
I found it to be a fascinating place. The two types of artwork seem to be able to happily co-exist. As I wandered around taking lots and lots of photos I began thinking about faith and for countries such as my own where God does not always seem to be at the forefront. Or in countries like this one where the God who is talked about is not always recognisible as the God I know.
