This will probably be my last blog post from Afghanistan (for now at least). It feels like this should be an amazingly poignant post but I seem to be lacking in inspiration. So I thought I would just leave you with the things I would like to remember about this place:
- Afghanistan is more than what you see on the BBC
- The people are some of the kindest, most generous I have ever met
- There is no such thing as too many carbs
- Burly Pashtun men love pink, poetry and flowers
- If you think you have enough clothes on you probably don't
- Children everywhere love ice cream and popcorn
- the theme from Titanic made it here
- Landcruisers are difficult to get into when you are short
- The landscapes are beautiful
- Chaokidars (door men) can turn their hands to anything
- Nothing is beyond repair/reuse
- Travel plans should be held loosely
- All plans should be held loosely
- The word to vomit is estafraq kadan (it seems to be one of the few words of Dari that have stuck in my mind)
- Say goodbye well, you don't know what will happen tomorrow
- Fruit tastes amazing in season (even Melon)
- A day can be brightened by a family of inflatable penguins
- There is no dari word for penguin
- Every day is an adventure - whether you want it to be or not!
- Helicopters fly in pairs
- No one can agree on earthquake or safe room protocol
- You can tell the difference between an explosion and thunder
- There is an Afghan proverb for everything
- Creativity is alive and well in Afghanistan.
- Afghanistan is amazing
